Kondō Isami's encampment site | kokosil Nagareyama-Honcho - Edo-style path

This place is the historical site of Kondō Isami's encampment. The Shinsengumi were a special police force created by the military government, active from 1863 until 1869. Led by Kondō Isami, they were based in Nagareyama during the final years of the Edo period.

When the Shinsengumi were surrounded by new government forces in Nagareyama, Kondō Isami surrendered, saying that the fire of armed conflict would bring suffering upon the local people. The Nagareyama Shinsengumi Festival is held every year on the second Sunday of April, commemorating Kondō Isami's life.
