Artwork explanation
It is said that renowned haiku poet Kobayashi Issa visited Nagareyama over 50 times during his lifetime in order to meet Akimoto Sanzaemon, one of the inventors of shiro-mirin, who went by the pen-name 'Sōju.' The Issa-Sōju Memorial Hall was opened in 1995 to commemorate their friendship. The Akimoto family residence, which was built near the end of the Edo period, had a study wing that was disassembled and restored to become what is the Sōju-tei building today. The facility also contains a reconstruction of the main building of the residence, as well as the Issa-an building that is used for tea ceremonies and haiku poet gatherings.
The kirie-andon lantern's artwork depicts the elegant Sōju-tei building and the traditional Japanese garden.
